Navarakizhi (also formally known in Sanskrit as Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda) is a highly specialized Ayurvedic rejuvenation procedure. It is a dual therapy that induces therapeutic sweating (Swedana) while aggressively imparting deep nutrition (Brimhana) to the body.
Unlike other forms of sweating that use steam to strip away fat and toxins (Langhana), Navarakizhi forces dense nourishment—derived from medicinal rice cooked in cows milk and herbal extracts—directly through the pores and into starved skeletal muscle.
This treatment is the ultimate Ayurvedic protocol for reversing severe muscle wasting, extreme Vata emaciation, and neuro-muscular atrophy. By continually pounding the body with these intensely hot, nutrient-dense boluses, local circulation is drastically heightened, allowing molecular repair of the Mamsa Dhatu (cellular muscle tissue) and neurological pathways.

Core Therapeutic Advantages
- Builds Muscle Bulk: The ultimate Ayurvedic therapy to aggressively reverse severe muscular atrophy, wasting, and physical emaciation.
- Cures Paralysis: Highly potent in treating hemiplegia, paraplegia, and poliomyelitis by forcing hyper-nutrition into dormant muscular and nervous pathways.
- Treats Joint Degeneration: Eliminates stiffness and severe joint constraints associated with osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
- Pediatric Growth Disorders: Tremendously safe and effective for children suffering from malnourishment, delayed milestones, or congenital muscular dystrophy.
- Skin Beautification: The milk and rice extracts act as an unparalleled exfoliator and moisturizer, radically enhancing skin texture and bestowing a royal glow.
- Soothes Motor Neurons: Assists in neurological motor impairments like Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis through intense Vata-alleviation.
Phased Treatment Procedure
Phase 1: Purvakarma
The doctor evaluates the patient for muscular dystrophy, extreme emaciation, or motor neuron lesions to ensure that bulk-building therapy (Brimhana) is strictly indicated.
Special Shashtika Shali (a rare medicinal rice that matures in 60 days) is forcefully cooked in a rich, thick decoction of Balamoola (Sida cordifolia) and pure cow's milk.
The hot, medicated rice pudding is tightly packed and tied into heavy, fist-sized muslin boluses (Kizhis) with a carefully fashioned grip for pounding.
Phase 2: Pradhana Karma
A mild preparatory oil massage is performed to open up the microscopic circulatory channels, readying the skin tissues to receive large volumes of nutrients from the rice.
Two therapists continuously dip the rice boluses into the boiling mixture of medicated milk and herbal decoction, ensuring they remain unceasingly hot.
The therapists vigorously and rhythmically massage the patient’s body with the hot boluses in seven traditional postures, forcing the medicinal rice extract directly through the skin into the starved muscle bellies.
Phase 3: Pashchatkarma
After the rigorous Pinda Sweda, the rice paste that has heavily coated the patient's body is gently wiped down using coconut leaves or soft towels.
A brief rest is permitted, followed directly by another extremely light application of balancing medicated oil to seal in the enormous amount of newly acquired cellular moisture.
The patient is assisted in taking a warm bath to remove the milk and herbal residue, followed by strict adherence to an easily-digestible, Vata-reducing diet.
