In Sanskrit, Greeva refers to the neck (cervical region) and Basti means to retain or hold. Greeva Basti is a specialized localized therapy that involves bathing the back of the neck in pools of deeply penetrating, warm herbal oils.
The cervical region is a complex superhighway of nerves, tendons, and delicate bones. In today's digital age, prolonged sitting and poor posture severely aggravate the Vata dosha in this area, resulting in intense structural degeneration.
The continuous application of heat (Swedana) combined with intensive herbal oil (Snehana) relaxes the cervical vertebrae and surrounding muscles. This localized saturation ensures that the therapeutic properties of the oil penetrate the skin barrier directly into the afflicted fascial tissues, relieving pain instantly and initiating long-lasting structural repair.

Core Therapeutic Advantages
- Cervical Spondylosis Relief: Deeply lubricates the cervical facet joints, slowing down degenerative changes associated with cervical spondylosis.
- Numbs Radiating Pain: Highly effective in relieving nerve compression that causes pain radiating down the shoulders, arms, and hands.
- Reduces Neck Stiffness: Instantly melts away chronic muscle tension in the trapezius and levator scapulae muscles caused by desk jobs.
- Nourishes Spinal Discs: The Snigdha (unctuous) quality of the oils hydrates and strengthens the intervertebral discs in the neck.
- Eliminates Vertigo: Assists in alleviating dizziness, vertigo, and tension headaches stemming from compressed cervical nerves.
- Increases Blood Flow: Local vasodilation flushes out lactic acid from stiff neck muscles and improves overall cranial circulation.
Phased Treatment Procedure
Phase 1: Purvakarma
Thorough evaluation of the neck, shoulders, and upper back to identify nerve compression, stiffness, or cervical spondylosis.
Mild therapeutic massage on the cervical spine, shoulders, and upper back to relax traps and prepare the localized tissue for deep heat.
Gentle localized herbal steam is directed at the neck area to induce mild sweating and open therapeutic channels.
Phase 2: Pradhana Karma
The patient lies comfortably face down. A precise circle of kneaded black gram (Urad dal) dough is fixed securely over the cervical spine (neck region).
Prescription medicated oil (like Ksheerabala or Dhanwantaram Tailam) is heated to an exact, soothing temperature and poured into the dough compartment.
The physician continuously monitors the oil. As it cools, it is carefully mopped out and replaced with freshly warmed oil for 30 to 45 minutes.
Phase 3: Pashchatkarma
The oil is drained completely, and the urad dal dough is detached. The neck is thoroughly cleaned with a soft, warm towel.
A very light massage technique is applied over the neck and shoulders to dissipate the absorbed warmth and deeply lock in the herbal properties.
The patient must avoid cold winds, sudden jerks to the neck, using extremely high pillows, and prolonged smart phone usage.
