Karna Poorana is one of the specialized localized therapies in Ayurveda entirely dedicated to the health of the ears and the delicate acoustic-vestibular nerve structures. It involves filling the ear canal with specifically formulated, pleasantly warm herbal oils or decoctions.
According to Ayurveda, the ears are one of the primary "seats" of the Vata dosha (the element of air and space). When Vata is aggravated by stress, cold winds, or aging, it causes intense 'dryness' in the acoustic pathways, leading to ringing, buzzing, and pain.
By continuously pooling deeply unctuous (Snigdha) and warm (Ushna) oils right against the tympanic membrane, the therapy forces the medicinal properties through the epithelial layer. This actively lubricates the tiny ossicle bones, nourishes the damaged auditory nerves, and instantly resolves the erratic, volatile Vata dosha causing Tinnitus and Vertigo.

Core Therapeutic Advantages
- Cures Tinnitus (Ringing Ears): The primary Ayurvedic treatment for halting persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears caused by aggravated Vata in the auditory nerves.
- Alleviates Earaches (Karna Shoola): Provides rapid, immense relief from sharp, chronic ear pain caused by dryness, nerve compression, or prolonged cold exposure.
- Reduces Vertigo & Dizziness: Stabilizes the fluid dynamics of the inner ear, heavily reducing the frequency of severe dizzy spells and Meniere's disease symptoms.
- Improves Hearing Clarity: Lubricates the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and auditory ossicles, actively preventing age-related hearing deterioration.
- Relaxes the Jaw (TMJ): The warmth deeply penetrates the temporomandibular joint, releasing clenched jaws, grinding, and intense facial tension.
- Soothes the Mind: Since the ears are a major seat of Vata dosha, saturating them profoundly acts as an anchor for the whole nervous system, inducing sleep.
Phased Treatment Procedure
Phase 1: Purvakarma
The physician thoroughly examines the ear canal to rule out active infections, ruptured eardrums, or excessive, hardened ear wax that might block the medicated oils.
A gentle, warm herbal steam is applied to the neck, jaw, and periauricular areas to dilate the microscopic channels and relax the tight fascial network surrounding the ear.
Specialized ear oils (like Bilwadi or Kshara Taila) are heated to carefully match the exact natural body temperature, ensuring profound comfort.
Phase 2: Pradhana Karma
The patient lies comfortably sideways on the treatment table so that the affected ear faces directly upwards toward the ceiling.
The warm medicated oil is gently instilled drop by drop into the ear canal until it is completely filled to the brim (the concha of the ear).
While the oil is retained inside the ear for 10-15 minutes, the therapist performs a very gentle, rhythmic massage around the base of the ear and along the side of the neck.
Phase 3: Pashchatkarma
The patient is instructed to turn their head, allowing the oil to thoroughly drain out of the ear canal onto a clean cotton towel.
The outer ear is gently wiped with sterile cotton. Deep insertion of cotton buds is strictly avoided to prevent pushing wax deeper.
The entire procedure is repeated on the opposite ear. The patient must avoid exposure to loud noises and cold wind post-treatment.
