Snehapana translates to the "drinking of fats/oils." While Abhyanga applies oil externally, Snehapana administration is an internal, oral therapy involving gradually increasing doses of medicated Ghee (clarified butter), oil, or muscle fat.
For decades, modern science believed bodily detox happened purely through the liver and kidneys. Ayurveda, thousands of years ago, identified that the most dangerous metabolic toxins are actually lipophilic (fat-soluble) and become glued inside our bone marrow and nervous tissues.
Only a lipophilic solvent like medicated ghee can breach these deep cellular barriers. During the 3 to 7 days of Snehapana, the ghee systematically surrounds, dissolves, and detaches these deep-seated toxins, making them "slippery." This ensures the toxins can be safely transported back to the gastrointestinal tract without rupturing the delicate micro-channels, preparing the body for the final massive purge (Vamana or Virechana).

Core Therapeutic Advantages
- Prerequisite for Detox: The mandatory, absolute first step before any major Panchakarma (like Vamana or Virechana) can be performed safely to prevent tissue rupture.
- Dissolves Deep Toxins: Medicated lipids cross the blood-brain barrier and penetrate deep into bone marrow, dissolving ancient, stubborn fat-soluble toxins.
- Cures Infertility: Specialized Snehapana protocols deeply nourish the reproductive tissues (Shukra Dhatu), dramatically resolving severe male and female infertility issues.
- Heals Peptic Ulcers: The thick coating of medicated ghee acts as a supreme anti-inflammatory shield, rapidly healing chronic gastric and duodenal ulcers.
- Subdues Vata-Pitta: Acts as the ultimate systemic pacifier for neuro-degenerative Vata disorders and severe acidic Pitta disorders like chronic hyperacidity.
- Lubricates Internally: Restores the depleted internal unctuousness (Snigdha), resolving chronic systemic dryness, extreme constipation, and stiff fibrous tissues.
Phased Treatment Procedure
Phase 1: Purvakarma
The physician strictly evaluates the patient’s digestive strength. Snehapana can only begin when the digestive fire is burning strong (Deepana-Pachana therapy is often done beforehand).
Based on the disease, specific medicated ghee (like Indukantam or Mahatikthakam Ghritam) or oil is selected. The exact starting dose is calculated mathematically based on the patient's metabolic rate.
The patient must wake up early and completely fast. The ghee is administered strictly on an empty stomach shortly after sunrise.
Phase 2: Pradhana Karma
The patient drinks the warm medicated ghee. The dosage is incrementally stepped up each day (e.g., 30ml, 60ml, 90ml) mimicking a geometric progression until saturation is reached.
The patient is closely monitored. They are only allowed to sip hot water periodically until hunger returns, which indicates the heavy ghee has been fully digested.
The process stops (usually between 3 to 7 days) once the body exhibits clinical signs of perfect saturation: soft stool containing fat, profound aversion to more ghee, and absolute suppleness of skin.
Phase 3: Pashchatkarma
Once severe hunger returns post-digestion, the patient is given extremely light, warm, unctuous liquid food (like rice gruel) to gently restart the normal digestive process.
The patient must observe total vocal and physical rest. Exposure to physical exertion, anger, intense sun, or cold winds will immediately reverse the therapy.
After successful completion of the days-long Snehapana, the patient undergoes intense external sweating (Swedana) to melt the toxic fat into the GI tract for final expulsion (Vamana/Virechana).
