Shirodhara is the crown jewel of Ayurvedic purification and rejuvenation. It involves repeatedly, continuously, and rhythmically pouring specifically prescribed heated medicated oils or fluids onto the center of the forehead (the Ajna Chakra, or third eye).
Rather than treating the body physically, Shirodhara acts directly on the central nervous system. The gentle pressure of the falling liquid generates a somato-autonomic reflex that deeply subdues the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) and awakens parasympathetic healing.
This treatment is classically prescribed in the ancient texts as a paramount therapy for balancing the Vata dosha in the mind, effectively "unplugging" the brain from modern overstimulation, halting racing thoughts, and stabilizing mood disorders, memory loss, and severe psychosomatic ailments.

Phased Treatment Procedure
Phase 1: Purvakarma
The physician evaluates the patient’s stress levels, sleep patterns, and mind-body constitution to select the specific liquid (medicated oil, milk, buttermilk, or decoction).
A gentle, relaxing massage over the scalp, forehead, and face using suitable oils to stimulate the marma points and calm the initial anxiety.
The patient lies supine (face up) on a specialized wooden table (Droni). The eyes are covered with cotton pads and secured with a headband to prevent liquid seepage.
Phase 2: Pradhana Karma
A traditional copper or earthen vessel with a tiny hole at the bottom is suspended exactly above the patient’s forehead, aligned with the Ajna Chakra (third eye).
The lukewarm medicated liquid is poured into the vessel. It falls as a continuous, rhythmic, unbroken stream (Dhara) onto the center of the forehead.
The therapist gently oscillates the vessel side to side, ensuring the warm liquid smoothly glides across the entire forehead in a mesmerizing pendulum motion for 30 to 45 minutes.
Phase 3: Pashchatkarma
The pouring is stopped. The liquid is wiped away from the forehead and face, and the head is thoroughly but gently towel-dried.
A special herbal powder (Rasnasnadi) is applied to the crown of the head to prevent the patient from catching a cold due to the oil saturation.
The patient rests for 15-30 minutes. Hot showers, direct exposure to sunlight or cold winds, and strenuous mental activities like screen-time are strictly restricted post-treatment.
