Healing Gastric Disorders with
Ayurveda: Natural Remedies
Gastric Disorders
Gastric disorders are caused by improper eating habits and bad lifestyle choices. Gastric illnesses are also caused by advancing age, some infections, and other GI tract ailments. Ayurvedic therapy for stomach disorders focuses on identifying and addressing the problem’s core cause.
With fast-paced lifestyles and irregular eating patterns, most of us are prone to developing digestive problems. Ayurveda has been used for ages for overall health and wellness.
Acidity:
Hyperacidity is simply an overabundance of stomach acid. The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid, a digestive liquid that breaks down food particles into their smallest form, to aid digestion. Hyperacidity occurs when the stomach’s hydrochloric acid level is abnormally high. With appropriate drugs and by adhering to specific dietary and lifestyle advice, acidity therapy provides extremely good relief, even in severe cases.
Acidity according to Ayurveda
Pitta and acidity may have a direct relationship. According to Ayurveda, hyperacidity is caused by high Pitta dosha and impeded Agni (digestive fire).
Acidity Causes
Acidity can be caused mainly by food, lifestyle, and mental or emotional state.
Symptoms
Acidity manifests itself as heart, throat, and chest burn, followed by repeated, sour belching. These symptoms frequently result in an aversion to food, even when you are hungry.
You may also feel acid reflux, often known as regurgitation of food combined with stomach acid. In severe cases, acid reflux can cause regular bouts of vomiting or diarrhoea.
Another common symptom of acidity is bloating, pain, and heaviness caused by the production of excess gas in the lower belly.
Ayurvedic acidity treatments include:
To treat acidity and promote digestion, Ayurveda suggests a variety of medicines, dietary changes, and lifestyle changes.
Drink coconut water twice a day,
Mix equal amounts of unrefined sugar, green cardamom, and fennel seeds. Make a fine powder out of it. Consume this powder in a glass of cold milk whenever you have acid reflux or heartburn.
Combine equal amounts of cumin and coriander seeds. Now combine it with equal parts sugar. That is, the cumin-coriander-sugar ratio must be 1:1. Put the mixture in a grinder and finely powder it. To get rid of acidity, drink this mixture twice a day.
To minimise acidity and other gastrointestinal disorders, Ayurveda recommends avoiding fermented foods and beverages.
Panchakarma Treatment:
Ayurvedic Gas Treatment: Fasting (Pachana) is recommended till Ama is detoxified. Warm water, mung water, warm water with lemon and honey, or warm vegetable soups can be consumed during this time.
Vamana (Medicated Emesis): In some circumstances, a mild Vaman followed by the appropriate Deepana can be used to expel all biotoxins.
Snehana, Swedan, and Paste: Applying warm Vatahara oils, followed by hot steam, aids in the passage of gas and softens the stomach. A comparable effect can be obtained by applying Hing, Triphala, or Trikatu paste. Ajamoda with takra or warm water can be used as well. Warm Hingu water applied to the umbilicus also helps ease gas.
Enema (Basti): Asthapana Basti (medicated decoction enema) provides instant relief for people suffering from acute discomfort. It assists with faeces and gas expulsion.
Depending on the degree of dryness, the Ayurvedic specialist may recommend a course of an enema (oil enema) for a week.
Acid reflux (GERD):
Acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when stomach acid rises into the oesophagus (food pipe). This ailment is commonly characterised by acidity and a bitter taste in the mouth.
For many people, it may be an uncommon problem, but for others, it may be a serious, life-long concern.
In Ayurveda, acid reflux disease is referred to as “amlapitta.”
The symptoms of the illness (Aruchi) include indigestion (Avipaak), fatigue (Klama), nausea (Utklesa), sour and bitter burping (Tikta-Amla Udgaar), heaviness (Gauravata), heart and throat burn (Hrit-Kantha Daha), and an aversion to eating.
Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to disease treatment. There are various methods for controlling or curing hyperacidity.
