Prevention of stroke and improvement of blood circulation through ayurveda

by | May 9, 2024 | English

As an Ayurveda practitioner, I’ve always been fascinated by the holistic approach our ancient system of medicine takes towards health and wellness. One area where Ayurveda truly shines is in its emphasis on preventive care, particularly when it comes to conditions like stroke. Stroke, often termed as a ‘brain attack’, occurs due to interrupted blood supply to the brain, leading to potentially devastating consequences. Some tips to prevent stroke are :

  • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Ayurveda recommends a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Include foods that are high in antioxidants, such as berries, nuts, and green leafy vegetables, to protect against oxidative stress, which can contribute to stroke risk.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining healthy blood flow and preventing the formation of blood clots. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and consider incorporating hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and coconut water into your diet.
  • Control Stress: Prolonged stress raises the risk of stroke and other conditions like hypertension. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and regular relaxation to promote emotional well-being and reduce the risk of stroke.
  • Get Regular Exercise: Engage in moderate exercise regularly to improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and maintain a healthy weight. Ayurveda recommends activities like brisk walking, swimming, and yoga asanas to promote cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of stroke.
  • Maintain Healthy Cholesterol Levels: High cholesterol levels can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of stroke. Consume foods low in saturated and trans fats, such as olive oil, avocados, and fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
  • Follow a Daily Routine (Dinacharya): Establishing a daily routine aligned with nature’s rhythms can help balance the body’s natural functions and promote overall well-being. Wake up early, eat meals at regular times, and establish a consistent bedtime to support optimal health and reduce the risk of stroke.
  • Herbal Support: Certain Ayurvedic herbs and spices have been traditionally used to support cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of stroke. Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized recommendations, which may include herbs like garlic, turmeric, ginger, and arjuna.

Drinks that are useful in improving blood circulation

  • Ginger Tea:

Ginger is a powerful herb known for its ability to improve blood circulation. Prepare a cup of ginger tea by boiling fresh ginger slices in water. You can add a dash of honey for taste. Consuming ginger tea regularly can help dilate blood vessels, ensuring smooth blood flow to the heart and brain.

  • Turmeric Milk (Golden Milk):

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities because of its active ingredient, curcumin. Warm milk mixed with a teaspoon of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper forms the famous golden milk. This concoction not only aids in blood circulation but also strengthens the cardiovascular system, lowering the risk of clot formation.

  • Hibiscus Tea:

Hibiscus flowers are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which promote healthy blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Steep dried hibiscus petals in hot water to make a refreshing tea. Regular consumption of hibiscus tea can help keep your arteries clear and flexible, reducing the risk of stroke.

  • Garlic Lemonade:

Garlic is renowned for its ability to lower cholesterol levels and prevent blood clots. Crush a few garlic cloves and mix the juice with freshly squeezed lemon juice and water to make a potent garlic lemonade. This drink not only improves blood circulation but also strengthens the heart muscle.

  • Cinnamon Infused Water:

Cinnamon is a warming spice that helps improve blood flow by widening the blood vessels. Add a cinnamon stick to a pitcher of water and let it infuse overnight. Drink this cinnamon-infused water throughout the day to keep your arteries healthy and prevent stroke.

  • Beetroot Juice:

Beetroot is packed with nitrates, which get converted into nitric oxide in the body, a compound that relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow. Blend fresh beetroot with some carrots and a hint of ginger to make a delicious and nutritious juice that promotes heart health and prevents stroke.

  • Ashwagandha Tea:

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb known for its stress-relieving properties. Chronic stress can contribute to poor blood circulation and increase the risk of stroke. Prepare ashwagandha tea by boiling ashwagandha root powder in water. This soothing tea not only calms the mind but also enhances blood circulation.

  • Arjuna Bark Decoction:

Arjuna bark is revered in Ayurveda for its cardio-protective properties. Boil a few pieces of Arjuna bark in water until it reduces to half. Strain the decoction and drink it warm. Regular consumption of Arjuna bark decoction strengthens the heart muscles and improves blood circulation, reducing the risk of stroke.

  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry) Juice:

Amla is a powerhouse of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, which supports the health of blood vessels and prevents plaque buildup. Blend fresh amla with a hint of honey to make a revitalizing juice that boosts blood circulation and strengthens the cardiovascular system.

Brahmi is a renowned brain tonic in Ayurveda, known for its cognitive-enhancing and neuroprotective properties. Steep dried Brahmi leaves in hot water to make a nourishing infusion. Regular consumption of Brahmi infusion not only enhances brain function but also improves blood circulation to the brain, reducing the risk of stroke. Incorporating these Ayurvedic drinks into your daily routine can significantly improve blood circulation in the heart arteries naturally, thereby reducing the risk of stroke. However, it’s essential to complement these remedies with a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress management, and adequate sleep, for optimal results. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, and by taking proactive steps towards maintaining cardiovascular health, you can lead a long and fulfilling life.
