Ayurveda: The Magical Remedy For Shoulder Pain

by | Jun 23, 2023 | English | 2 comments

The shoulder joint is the most movable joint in the human body. Shoulder pain can impair a person’s daily activities. There are different treatments for shoulder pain, but if you ask why Ayurveda is better for the treatment, it is because Ayurveda focuses on the root cause and personalizes treatment depending upon the cause and person who has been affected.

UNDERSTANDING SHOULDER PAIN IN AYURVEDA In Ayurveda, it is considered that the pain over the shoulder is due to the imbalance of Vata dosha, which is triggered by different factors. Excess Vata dosha can lead to dryness, increased sensitivity, and inflammation in the shoulder joint. And also, accumulated ama (toxin) can complicate the condition even more. Ayurveda helps in balancing Vata and eliminating ama for effective shoulder pain management .

WHO IS MORE AFFECTED BY SHOULDER PAIN?

  • Genetical factor
  •  Lifestyle factors: like smoking, alcohol consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle
  • Sleep disorder
  •  Participating in sports or works that are giving strain to the muscles of shoulder.

WHAT ARE  THE CAUSES  OF SHOULDER PAIN

Rotator cuff injury: tear or strain in the rotator cuff can result from overuse, trauma, or degeneration due to aging.

Frozen shoulder: it causes stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint, often associated with limitation to the range of movements.

Shoulder impingement: It occurs when the rotator cuff tendons or bursa become pinched between the shoulder bone. Excess activities or repetitive motion can cause irritation and inflammation.

Shoulder dislocation: when the upper arm bone called as humerus pops out of the shoulder socket. Commonly it occurs due to trauma or sports injuries which cause intense pain and instability.

Osteoarthritis: This is due to degeneration due to aging, repetitive stress, or a history of injury that may contribute to the development of osteoarthritis.

Bursitis: Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs that cushion and reduce friction between bone, tendons, and muscles. Inflammation to the bursae can cause shoulder pain, commonly from repeated vigorous movements.

Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder, such as biceps tendonitis or supraspinatus tendinitis, can lead to pain and restricted movements. This tendonitis can be caused by overuse or sudden injury.

Treatment Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of medicine, offers a comprehensive approach for managing shoulder pain. It focuses on balancing the body, mind, and spirit to promote overall well-being. Here are some key aspects of Ayurvedic management for shoulder pain:

Herbal Remedies: Ayurveda utilizes various herbs with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties to reduce pain and inflammation. Some commonly used herbs include Shallaki (Boswellia serrata), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), and Dashmool (a combination of ten herbs). These herbs can be consumed in the form of capsules, powders, or decoctions.

External Applications: Topical application of herbal oils is a common practice in Ayurveda for relieving shoulder pain. Mahanarayan oil, a blend of several Ayurvedic herbs, is often used for massage to improve blood circulation, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain. Additionally, herbal poultices and pastes may be applied to the affected area for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Panchakarma: Panchakarma treatments such as Abhyanga (therapeutic massage), Swedana (herbal steam therapy), and Patra Pinda Sweda (herbal bolus massage) can be beneficial in reducing pain, inflammation, and restoring shoulder function.

Lifestyle and Diet: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet to support overall well-being and manage pain. Gentle exercises, stretching, and yoga asanas that specifically target the shoulder region can help improve flexibility and strength. Avoiding heavy lifting, repetitive overhead activities, and maintaining good posture are also recommended. In terms of diet, incorporating anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric, ginger, garlic, and omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and support the healing process.

Stress Management: Ayurveda recognizes the role of stress in exacerbating pain. Stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga nidra can help reduce stress levels, promote relaxation, and alleviate shoulder pain.

It’s important to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can evaluate your specific condition and provide personalized recommendations based on your unique needs. They can guide you in choosing appropriate herbs, treatments, and lifestyle modifications to effectively manage shoulder pain.

CONCLUSION: Seeking Ayurveda gives more valuable insights and effective management for shoulder pain, focusing on rebalancing the Vata dosha, eliminating toxins, and promoting overall well-being. By adopting Ayurvedic practices such as herbal remedies, massages, detoxification therapies, and mindful lifestyle modifications, individuals can find relief and support the body’s natural healing process. Remember, always seek professional advice to ensure safe and optimal outcomes on your journey toward shoulder pain alleviation.
