Post-Delivery Care in Ayurveda

by | Sep 14, 2023 | English | 0 comments

The journey of pregnancy and childbirth is a transformative experience in a woman’s life. In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of natural healing, post-delivery care holds great significance. It focuses on restoring balance and vitality to the new mother while ensuring the healthy development of the newborn. In this blog, we’ll explore the internal and external treatments recommended for post-delivery care, tailored for both C-section and normal delivery scenarios.

Internal Treatments for Post-Delivery:

  • Dietary Guidelines: Ayurveda places great emphasis on diet during the post-delivery period. A mother’s diet should include easily digestible and nourishing foods. Ghee (clarified butter), milk, cooked grains, and a variety of vegetables are encouraged. Spices like cumin, fennel, and turmeric aid digestion and boost immunity.
  • Herbal Decoctions: Special herbal decoctions, known as “Kwath,” are prescribed to help with postpartum recovery. Ingredients like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Gokshura are commonly used to rejuvenate the mother’s body and promote milk production for breastfeeding.
  • Ayurvedic Supplements: Depending on individual needs, Ayurvedic supplements like Shatavari capsules or Chyawanprash can be recommended to enhance energy levels, boost immunity, and support hormonal balance.

External Treatments for Post-Delivery Care:

  • Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Postpartum massages with warm, herbal-infused oils are a cornerstone of Ayurvedic post-delivery care. These massages help in muscle relaxation, improved blood circulation, and the elimination of toxins from the body. For C-section deliveries, it’s essential to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a modified approach.
  • Swedana (Herbal Steam Bath): Steam baths with herbs like Dashmool or Ajwain are highly beneficial. They help in alleviating postpartum pains, reducing swelling, and promoting overall well-being.
  • Lepana (Herbal Paste): Lepana made from herbs like turmeric and sandalwood, mixed with rosewater or milk, can be applied to the mother’s body to cleanse and rejuvenate the skin. Additionally, stretch marks are lessened by it.
  • Dhara: Dhara involves pouring warm herbal oil or decoction in a continuous stream over the body as shareera dhara  or over forehead as shirodhara . It helps in relieving body both mental and physical stress, which is crucial during the postpartum period.

Care for C-section and Normal Delivery

  • C-section Delivery: After a C-section, the focus is on wound care and abdominal recovery. Herbal pastes like Haridra Kalka are applied externally to reduce inflammation and promote healing. Abdominal binding with a cotton cloth is recommended to provide support to the weakened abdominal muscles.
  • Normal Delivery: In the case of normal delivery, the emphasis is on perineal care. Herbal sitz baths, using herbal decausion can help in reducing discomfort and promoting healing of the perineal area.
  • Bandaging is done to promote the uterus to get back to normal position

Conclusion:

Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to post-delivery care that addresses the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of the new mother. Internal treatments, including a balanced diet and herbal supplements, help restore vitality, while external treatments like massages and herbal baths aid in physical recovery. Specific care protocols are tailored to C-section and normal delivery scenarios, ensuring that every mother receives the care she needs during this crucial phase of her life. Always consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to create a personalized postpartum care plan that suits your individual needs. Remember, a healthy and happy mother is key to the well-being of her newborn.
